IS A VOLUNTEER RUN, SNORKEL INSTRUCTION COURSE for underprivileged children who already can swim. Children are invited to participate in a 5 session program which transports them to different beaches around the island and are taught about snorkeling and environmental protection.
Kids for Coral volunteers provide transportation, instruction, food, beverages and FUN for all during this 2 week-end course. Children get the chance to see different parts of the island and enjoy different beaches during the 5 class program. On completion of the program, each child can receive a graduation certificate IF the child passes the last day’s testing.
Organized as a project by Reef Care Curaçao, in 1993, to create a generation of children who could safely value their coral reefs. The program lost focus in 2001, until the arrival of Lee’s Reef Project’s intern: Arda Riedijk. In February, 2004, Arda re-energized the program which now has five (5) courses scheduled for 2004-2005 and is completely volunteer run.
Kids for Coral is presented as a Reef Care project, but works closely with Lee’s Reef Project. Currently Kids for Coral is offering the course to the schools of Bandabou in the season 2004/2005. Furthermore, Sunset Waters Beach Resort facilitates the last lesson of each course by providing their beach and lagoon for the final day and serving drinks and snacks. Sta. Martha Bay is unknown to many children despite the fact that it is close to their homes.
Applications for students AND volunteers can be obtained from the Lee’s Reef Project site office at SUNSET WATERS BEACH RESORT. Twenty-five children maximum can be enrolled in each course.
