EXPEDITION The children of Curacao have little opportunity to study the natural bounty of their island. Many factors converge to cause this result including: a short five hour school day; and lack of funding for development of a local natural science curriculum in the island’s native language.
EXPEDITION STA. MARTHA is a field trip primary school curriculum bringing the children of the Band Abao Region an opportunity to study the wonders of their exceptional environment.
EXPEDITION STA. MARTHA is a classroom and field trip curriculum WHERE primary grade children have the opportunity to STUDY and EXPERIENCE the spectacular Sta. Martha Bay coastline and bay area. Classes learn about: the beauty and diversity of this fragile coral reef; its importance in the global and local eco-systems; and the pressures and burdens the reef faces daily.
The curriculum includes class-room presentations and projects followed by a ½ day field trip to SUNSET WATERS BEACH RESORT’s environmental classroom Klas Ambiental. EXPEDITION STA. MARTHA is now entirely developed and taught by participating local teachers. At REEF FEST CURACAO local educators experience Lee’s Reef Project’s educator training program. EXPEDITION STA. MARTHA has been offered to the primary schools of Banda Abao for the last four academic years. Currently, five local primary schools participate in our REEF FEST and EXPEDITION programs. Over 1,000 students are taking Lee’s Reef Project’s Expedition this year! JOIN US in this exciting effort….
