LRP on Stage

LRP On StageDuring the summer of 2009 Lee’s Reef Project, in conjunction with Grupo Kara, presented a series of educational, interactive street performances. Street theater, once popular on the island, has waned in the past two decades, but these performances were welcomed by the community as entertaining, informative and fun. With generous funding from the Prins Bernhard Funds of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba, LRP and Grupo Kara were able to present six shows to a wide variety of audiences.  Each show, entitled “Curacao i nos Rif di Koral” was an interactive performance that brought spectators on stage to help act out the skits.  One skit featured a Scuba diver and a local fisherman on a Jerry Springer like talk show, arguing about trash in the water, overfishing and the importance of tourism on the island.  Spectators were brought on stage to help provide compromises and amicable solutions to the problems both parties faced.  All of the performances addressed the issues of ecological conservation, sustainability and the importance of education in these areas.

There were six performances in total, at Sunset Waters Beach Resort, Barber community Center, Tera Kora community center, Playa Caracasbaai, The Scouting Jamboree at Ronde Klip, and a July 4th Performance on the Brionplein in Otrobanda.

We would like to thank the Prins Bernhard Cultuur Fonds of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba for financing this project, and also Grupo Kara for their excellent work!
