Lee's Reef Project at Introduces you to our Waste Water Garden

More damage is done to coastal eco-systems when inhabitants and visitors take long hot showers or flush their toilets; than by touching the coral with fin or hand.  Sewage runoff is a top cause of the destruction of Curacao's pristine marine environment.  With this common problem in mind, Lee's Reef Project is always looking for strategies that allow visitors to enjoy our reef without burdening it.

Our most recent conservation effort is a relatively low cost, “state of the art” tertiary water treatment system.  The wastewater garden allows the resort to reuse its wastewater for landscaping and other purposes, conserving 25% of the resort's overall water consumption.

The system also prevents polluted water from reaching Santa Martha Bay's pristine coastal eco-system.  In addition to conserving water, the garden will provide an abundance of beautiful flowers and edible products that will be available for the resort to use everyday.

The RECIP garden system became operational in November, 2007.  The water quality and plant life of the treatment system will be studied and managed by local secondary school students.

We are now developing strategies to most effectively use this resource:

  1. as a vocational and educational tool for local students;
  2. to enhance the gardens and landscaping of Sunset Waters Beach Resort; and
  3. to show the South Caribbean an effective, and profitable sustainable development strategy.
